About a year back, sometime in mid 2007 when i first read about the sub-prime crisis and all of the talk about it being a financial disaster in the waiting, i guess my first reaction was, how could US banks lending to credit unworthy people result in a worldwide financial disaster...A year later, with the financial "tsunami" crippling every country, i probably take my works back. U probably have banks n fiancial institutions falling like nine pins all round the world. The funniest thing i read is ,"Iceland going bankrupt", an entire country goes bankrupt??? The joke doin the rounds is that , In the US , u get a bank free if u buy a toaster :)... Its simply amazing , i guess, the amount of financial clout a country can have.
A year back, when the Indian Economic story was doing the rounds, there was this theory of "decoupling" as the financial pundits preferred to call it, of how India economy now is self driven and that our economy will probably be unaffected in case of any global(read America) economic slowdown. A year later as u see it, each time the American markets go down by 2% the Indian markets respond by falling 5%. well so much for decoupling theory, i guess.

Having said that , credit being highly regulated in India, i probably dont expect Indian banks to go bust...we r probably a bit better off when compared to them. Somehow hope that the global crisis gets sorted sooner rather than later, else we probalby r looking at a bleak future ahead...

    Blasts and the aftermath
One more weekend, and another blast somehow probably has become a monthly affair now, and its preceeded with the same empty rhetoric, the home minister says its an attempt to destabilse the country and promote enimity betweeen communities while the other side claims its thanks to the soft policies of the govt. All news channels flash gory images of blasts and a day after its the same story of resilience, of how the people have fought the terror and come back on the streets. Somehow scary as it may , probably its reached a stage where people have become indifferent to it.
In case of the US u probably had Airlines going bankrupt after the 9/11 blasts simply coz people somehow refused to travel out of fear or mayb because they did not like the extensive security arrangements. Back here i guess somehow u simply cannot afford to do it, somehow u bomb trains , u bomb buses, markets the "terror" part of the terror attacks will last for an hour, two or mayb a day at the most. After that its back to normal, people will travel in the same train , shop in the same market, its back to pickin ur pieces and movin on with life. Life goes on as they say. If Operation BAD as they preferrred to call it, is supposed to spread fear anxiety among people, they have probably picked the wrong country. Call it resilience or indifference, u probably can pick ur word.

    Consience
Somehow i guess, i always have had an extremely strong and clear consience, whenever i have done something which i probably thought was wrong, have had that consience pricking me endlessly unless i rectify it. Probably have been pondering over something for a couple of days now, somehow i guess sometimes doing the right thing does not necessarily mean a clear consience.

Knowing myself i probably will go with the clear consience thing.Probably a sign of weakness or surrender, really dont know, i guess. I guess being at peace with myself is probably more important for me.

The tv as an idiot box has finally lived up to its name. There are only two kinds of shows on tv now, one is the Ekta kapoor kind and the other reality shows which are anything but real. Somehow every channel seems to have its own version of song/dance programs, with the over zealous judges talking about the sur n taal crap. The sports channels too seem to be overloaded with cricket. There's so much cricket now that even an Indo pak cricket match fails to evoke as much interest as it probably wud have some time back.
Somehow i guess Ekta kapoor wants to be identified with much more than Saas bahu series and so what we have now is a remake of the epic mahabharath title aptly as kahini mahabharat ki. Watched a "sneak preview" as they preferred to call it on one of the news channels and what we have is not the mahabharat the age old epic but it looks more like mahabharat 2050, we have all the mahabharat characters in designer clothes and the characters looked more like someone from the greek era. i guess the greek were probably more stylish than us. The show was co-hosted by somebody who would be playing the character of Bhima. And surprise surprise he appealed to all his female fans to watch the show because he had worked out to build a "six pack" just for the role. And I thought mahabharatha was all abt gods.Somehow i guess anyone who manages to actually watch it may probably get to know certain things which is not a part of the epic too.
With nothin interesting to watch on TV i have probably got back to what i like best, i.e watch movies.watched lotsa them, noteworthy among them being,
Jaane tu..ya jane na - cute movie as they say, the storyline may not be somethin new, but it has got great music, lotsa fun n an electric on screen pair in genelia n imran .wat else can u ask for to spend a lazy weekend :) luv the kabhi kabhi aditi song.
    Aamir - good movie
My cousin vinny - nice comedy
Into the Wild - has become my all time fav . Anybdy who likes his movies shud watch it
    derailed - pretty good
The bank job - watchable once.
Juno - good. Somehow many people i know didn't like it. Liked it for its witty dialogues.
Three seasons of lost and one season of Heroes and many more which i can't seem to recall.

    IPL
Watched the much hyped IPL for my weekend entartainment, i guess whether u like it or not, u probably cannot help but marvel at the magnitude of the tournament with hundreds of crores being thrown around literally. The Blore team itself went for a mind boggling 446 crores and this excludes the costs involved in getting the individual players and coaches. Had read a column by Harsha Bhogle where he had written that, maybe a decade or so back when the same Aussie n English teams toured India along with their media the same people used to jeer at India, India was never good enough, the Infrastructure was bad, it was a land of snake charmers and beggars, come to India and u probably will be down with the "Delhi belly".
Circa 2008 n the same people have an altogether different opinion, India is a beautiful country with wonderful people, Bollywood which was dismissed as a song n dance tamasha suddenly is the most sought after, Chicken tikka is the flavour of the season. We have Brett Lee singing an Hindi song with his Aussie accent and Ricky Poniting in a news channel claiming that he loves kolkatta. As they say, "Money talks", i guess and how its for all of us to see. Damn i wish i was a cricketeer :)

    Powering on...
For anybody remotely familiar with the Indian financial markets and probably even for others who follows news events the biggest news this week must be the Reliance Power IPO, somehow whether u like it or not its everywhere form the newspapers to entertainment channels to hoardings around. If news channels are to be believed, from housewives to Oldies to panwallhas, everyone wants a chunk of the reliance pie. "Gone in 60 secs" was wat some other channels called it coz it got fully subscribed within 60 secs.
Somehow despite the dubious methods as some might say followed by the Ambanis to rise to the top, the loyalty they enjoy among the common people is something spectacular. i guess if its a question of creating wealth for their investors then Ambanis are right up there. And as for the experts and stock anlysts they seem to be crying hoarse that the issue isoverpriced and that the company does not deserve such high valuations. Somehow i guess atleast for now it does not matter and the people seem to be dancing to the younger Ambani's tunes. I guess for now as the Reliance power AD goes, its "Power on toh India On".

There are very few movies whih leave a lasting impact make u feel good, if ever there was one, Taare Zameen Par has to be it. As they say a movie with truly honest intentions and good at heart. Ishanth, the young kid has to face the wrath of his teachers at school and constant comparisions to his super bro at home. Somehow i guess u can't help but feel for the young guy. All the moments are expertly shot. Thanks to AAmir the perfectionist.

Somehow wouldn't mind watching it again (provided any of my roommates give me company again). I guess i was big fan of the title song "Taare Zammeen Par" , used to listen to it atleast 5 times everyday. now that i have seen the movie the song seeems way too beautiful. Probably will listen to it twice as many times until i get sick of it. A must watch for every movie lover and for everybody else too.

    Om Shanthi Om
watched Om Shanthi Om, must say its pretty good.or atleast parts of it.A movie extremely well made. A complete Bollywood masala flick. Starting with the 70s with SRK as a junior artist to present day with SRK reborn as a superstar. The first half is great with Farah Khan portraying the 70s era, with great sets, people sporting sideburns, the baggy pants and u have a digital sunl dutt, jitender dancing with deepika. The one reason every guy shud watch the movie is definitely Deepika Padukone. playing the 70s diva, she looks absolutely stunning, incredible and every other adjective u could possibly think of. U probably cud watch the movie just for her.

About SRk , i guess this was one role that was tailor made, a role which required emotional melodrama to portray the 70s, somehow no other actor probably could have a done a better job than him. The second half is a bit of a drag at times, but i guess the first half more or less makes up for it. As for the purists who like a plot in a movie i guess this movie has none, but somehow if ur idea of fun is a perfect bollywood masala flick then "Om Shanti Om" is the movie for u. I probably have been repeating this dialogue to all my frens ,just to make it a part of the blog :),
"filmon ki tarah hamari zindagi mein bhi end tak sab kuch theek hi ho jata hai aur agar theek na ho, to woh 'The End' nahin."

Have been listening to Ke bin tere.. from the film Aggar by mithoon for the past couple of weeks. Must say he is one singer with a truly soulful voice, the kind which puts u at ease instantly. His other songs include tere bin from Bas Ek Pal , Maula Maula from Anwar, all of which are truly amazing nos. Something which u can listen to again n again n again. If there is another singer of that genre and calibre, it has to be Rahet Fateh Ali Khan. His songs Mann Ki lagan from Jiya Dhadak dhadak from Kalyug and Bol ne halke halke from JBJ are among my all time favourites. Couple of singers who u can listen to anytime of the day.Magical if i have to describe in a word....

    A year passes by...
Wished my sister who was happily holidaying in Goa on her first anniversary today, could not believe that a year had passed off so fast, remember that it was just yday, that i was running all round my house trying to get everything right on the eve of her marriage. Somehow i get the feeling that 2007 is whizzing past me,too fast...for some reason felt that 2006 was slow n boring and 2007 has simply taken off a bit too fast.Mayb its bcoz i have kept myself real busy with many things or mayb as they say its all in the mind.

    Chak De....
Watched the ,movie "Chak De" on the eve of independence day, and must say absolutely loved it. The perfect sports movie about the "underdog" coming out trumps. The theatre more or less resembled a hockey stadium with people cheering all along. A movie about a disgraced former player who comes back to coach the Women's hockey to regain some of his lost pride. I guess u probably know the storyline , but the movie is so well made, that u can't help but root for the underdogs.I guess if anyone wanted to see absolute girl power in its true form, Chak De.. has to be it..The way they beat up some goons in a hotel was something really hilarious, and was greeted with cheers from the entire female audience in the hall. When SRK can give such powerful performances u wonder why he ever bothers to act in all those lovesick...loverboy kinda quirky roles. Having said all that, this movie is one that shud be watched in the theatres with a big group of friends.

I guess in other things have manged to keep myself real busy in the last few months with lotsa work , some more movies and books. Read 2 of them in the last few months , "The inheritance of loss" and currently "Shantharam". Invested some more money in the stock markets and lost some more money. Somehow the golden touch which i thought i possessed has simply vanished into thin air. Looking fwd to an interesting next few months, i guess with lotsa things lined up.

Have been following the stock market closely the last few days. started as an investor some months back, shifted to trading few weeks back. Somehow have been really fascinated by the stock markets where a simple speculation/rumour can result in a huge upswing/downturn depending on the news.

Made a nice tidy sum the first day i traded, better the next day...this went on for a few days. Somehow got the feeling that i am invincible, every stock i touch was turning into gold. The stock market crashed a few days later, the huge overconfidence made me invest again and predictably lose a lot of money.hmm...guess am human after all...Sometimes the urge to make a quick buck does get the better of you.

    Metro!!!
Watched Metro, must say one of the best movies i have watched so far this year...Hats off to Anurag Basu - the director. A movie about life in urban Mumbai , about different people trying to find happiness n love in their own ways , with some people trying to get into relationships n others suferring silently in them and compromising on their own ideals for their skyrocketing ambitions.

After Big Brother i guess its the best performance by Shilpa Shetty. And as for the star of the movie its undoubtedly Irfan khan with his excellent comic timing n dialogue delivery. The biggest applause in the crowd was when Dharmendra makes his appearance. The director has put the oldie couple of nafisa Ali n Dharmendra, both tryin to revive an older relationship probably to emphasise the fact that its never too late to fall in love. All in all if ever there was a movie which deserved the tag "different" , i guess Metro has to be it.

As Australia won the finals and with yet another world cup coming to an end , i guess terming this world cup as boring would be an understatement. There was nothing in this world cup to suggest a contest. As for india they were happily cooling their heels off back home after the first round.

There is much talk in all the news channels on what this wud mean for the popularity of the game where cricket as they say is nothing short of a "religion". So will cricket end up losing all its popularity, i guess not...India will be heading to Bangladesh next, some clever sports channel will rebuild all the hype n hoopla by naming it as "Revenge of the Indian tigers" something in the lines of Pakraman, Lagaan of cricket which did the rounds of some sports channels recently.Mayb Tendulkar (droped from one-dayers) will hit a sparkling century in the tests and will claim he has answered all his critics and all will be hunky dory n fine with Indian cricket.

I guess the biggest problem with India is that its more of a one sport country, and the only sport where india can compete somewhat is cricket, with India ranking a lowly sixth
in a sport which has roughly ten competent teams. With hockey(Our national game, or so they say) virtually dead in India, and tennis in its last years wat with Lee- Hesh in their last years... really sad state of affairs for sports in a country which boasts of a population of a billion.
So i guess love it or hate it , unless some radical changes take place n some other sports get the patronage they so desparetely require, it will be cricket which will rule the roost.

    Good riddiance hutch!!!!
After a year of facing congested networks, network busy msges each time i tried to call, finally got rid of my hutch connection for airtel. i guess the last straw was the other day when i had to reconnect thrice during a single call, thanks to the poor network...The best thing abt hutch undoubtedly r their ads which r simply superb n well made n the worst thing comes only when u subscribe to it....somehow i guess hutch has taken their customers for granted.
As they say i guess better late than never.

    Another typical weekend passes by...
Weekends nowadays have become more or less predictable, i guess...i pop into a friend's place...5-6 of us cramp into a place fit for 3...Big plans are made, big outings are planned...and come weekend..the inevitable laziness creeps in..and the plans end up being just that...plans..maybe next week is the popular understanding...And viola another lazy weekend passes by, couple of more movies watched(thankfully this friend of mine has a great movie collection) followed by more talk of how boring and lazy weekends have become...
But then thinking back...i guess each week has had its fair share of announcements and surprises followed by a sense of happiness n excitement... I suppose 2007 will be full of them...As long as the good news keeps trickling in, i guess i sure will not be complaining about anything.
